Dryer Vent Tips

Q: How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?
A: You should have your dryer vent system inspected and cleaned on an annual basis.

Q: Is there anything that would indicate that I have a problem?
A: You may notice several things that could indicate that you have a clogged vent and therefore fire hazard. Warning signs to look for include lint found behind or around your dryer, dryer feels unusually hot while drying, smell of mold or fire, lint tray shows no accumulation after several loads, dryer takes more than one cycle to dry a single load of laundry.

Q: I haven't had any problems in years. Why should I worry now?
A: It's true. Many people are very fortunate, but I bet if you asked one of the 15,500 homeowners that loses their home every year due to a dryer vent fire they would say to have it inspected and cleaned by a professional as recommended.

Q: What should I do between annual inspections?
A: Make sure you clean your lint tray before and after every load, scrub your lint tray with hot soapy water until the water runs through it every other month, clean any lint behind and around your dryer, keep flammable materials or clothing that has been exposed to these materials out and away from your dryer.

Q: What is the difference between foil and semi-rigid dryer vent material?
A: Foil piping is very dangerous. Due to its structure, the deep ridges trap lint and accumulate much quicker. This material also has a tendency of collapsing and cutting off circulation to your dryer which creates a fire hazard and can release carbon monoxide into your laundry room. Foil, like plastic, has been proven to catch fire while semi-rigid and hard aluminum dryer vent help to contain fires better.
